One of the favorite parts of my job is the spontaneous things that happen...the emotion, tears and laughter. Melissa and John started planning the large, elaborate wedding and chucked it all to elope here in Savannah, yesterday. What better way to start the week than with a wedding! Melissa cried...she laughed...she was radiant. John couldn't take his eyes off of her. They followed the ceremony with a carriage ride to City Market, a romantic lunch at Belfords and for dinner...flip flops at The Crab Shack on Tybee Island.
They chose the lovely Forsyth Park Inn so of course, the details fell into place beautifully. It is always a touching ceremony with Rev. Schulte..he pays attention to the details and makes sure the focus is on the couple. I would have to say he loves his job as much I do.
There are people in your life that you meet and for a while you are inseparable. But life often pulls you in opposite directions and every Saturday night margaritas becomes one or two Saturdays a year....yet, you can pick up the phone in a time of need and they are there...no questions, no worries, just an ear, a laugh...just love.
That is Susan for me.
Here is Susan on her wedding day in 2002 outside her parent's home. Yes, I took the photograph and it is grainy, precious film and her Dad's favorite image. I wanted you to see how radiant she was as a bride...even in this poor scan of a negative. And then Susan and I just a three short months ago at a wedding...I was working and she was having fun.
My dear, sweet, Susan...her Mom, Rita, passed away suddenly this weekend. Rita was only 60...just beginning the fun part of life...enjoying her kids and grandkids and her funny, funny husband, Paul. Rita was always smiling, laughing and dancing. We had many St. Patrick's Days together in Savannah and I was overjoyed when she and Paul came down from Ohio for Lou's and my 10 year anniversary party. She always sent me sweet notes and gave big, big hugs. She was full of bright, radiant light. I will miss her.
I will miss her.
My heart breaks for Susan, for Paul and for their family...because I have walked this path of sudden death and it is cold, lonely and hard. It is shocking that the world moves forward and you can barely move through the next minute and you most certainly cannot image the next year...for each day is one day further from when life was perfect.
I wish there was a way to make the journey a little easier for Susan...all I have are Wordsworth's words, that my own father used to say to me.
"What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now for ever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind..."
Godspeed, Susan. Rita will be with you in your heart forever.
Love to you....
There aren't too many weddings where BOTH the bride and groom are so incredibly laid back. But, if you know Brian and Dana, it makes perfect sense as they have spent their years together island hopping in the Caribbean...Dana as a golf pro and Brian as a hotelier. Two years together on Anguilla sealed the deal with a beach proposal. They carried the island attitude with them to their new home in Savannah where you'll find Dana on the links at Savannah Harbor and Brian mostly at the Savannah International Airport catching flight to his next meeting for Starwood.
