Hilton Head Wedding Photographers, Jessica and Kevin
02.08.10  |  Weddings

A few years ago, I had the honor of photographing Jessica and Kevin's wedding at Hilton Head Country Club. They are from my home state, Ohio, so, of course, we had a special bond! Well, Jessica has opened her own photography studio in their new city, Houston.

Imagine how delighted I was when she listed me as one of her inspirations on her blog! I live for creating images that blow my couples away...but this takes it to a whole new level. Good Luck, J!

Don't Ask Donna - The DJ
02.04.10  |  Personal

I had lunch last week with some DJ friends and after the usual business was out of the way the conversation naturally turned to bad DJ stories.
We laughed until my sides hurt.

Let me first say this...I am not pro-band or pro-DJ. I am PRO PROFESSIONAL. A fabulous DJ is one-thousand times better than a crappy band and vice versa.
The DJ is the linchpin in a wedding. He has the power to turn an elegant affair into a cheesy, cable special in 10 minutes flat. I've seen them all...

the DJ who missed his calling as a broadway star --singing along to every song
the DJ who wears the musical note vest and spends most of his time on the dance floor like he is a guest
the DJ who hangs a huge banner like your wedding is a high school prom and repeatedly announces that this is the the "DJ Stan Show".
the DJ who talks and talks and talks...no one cares about how the tradition of the cake cutting, garter toss, father/daughter dance came to be
the DJ who is plastered and slurs the way through the night
the DJ who plays the Culture Club's greatest hits and other fine hits!
the DJ who likes to "slow it down" just when the party is pumping or goes from Kanye West to Karen Carpentar in the same set.
the DJ who pauses in between each song --making the crowd pause, come down and then work right back up again.
the DJ who hits on the bridesmaids, bride or worse, the MOB. (Yes, I've seen it)

A fabulous DJ understands that his role is the "gracious emcee". He follows the timeline, ensures the guests are entertained and paces the party. He speaks very little and can read the crowd. He brings the party to a pinnacle, like a slow build to the frenzy...when the crowd can't get enough. He wears black (no tuxes needed), doesn't drink on the job and doesn't dance with Grandma or make sexual remarks about or to the bride. He knows how to fade out a dud of a song and doesn't pause between songs.

But above all, he knows when to play "Living On A Prayer" or "Brick House".

Oh, and another note...money doesn't always matter. I've seen crazy expensive club DJ's from LA who killed and I mean killed a wedding. A wedding is a special family event...a celebration. There is a certain finesse in mastering the event and of the dozens and dozens of DJ's I've seen, I can count on one hand how many I would truly recommend. Yep, one hand. Good ones are few are far between.

GET REFERENCES! And lots of them.

Savannah Wedding Photographers, Julie and Bill
02.01.10  |  Weddings

And the rains came...
Julie and Bill's January wedding was both a breeze and a challenge for me. It was a dark and stormy night as the story goes...and the Mansion was PACKED! There was not a spec of light or a private corner to be had for an intimate bridal session. And I searched in vain. Nevertheless...it was a brilliantly easy wedding for me. You know what made it amazing? No, light didn't pierce through the clouds and the sideways rain most certainly did not let up.

It was Julie. She was so, so happy she was glowing.

And it was Bill, he was excited like a five-year-old boy who just got a new bike.

There were people everywhere...trying to stay out of the rain, but Julie and Bill, they were focused on one another. It was as if I wasn't even there, the guests weren't there...just the two of them focused on one another. It made you so badly want to be a part of their world...the love they shared. I paused for a moment when I discovered they had been together for years, because their love was so fresh, so fun.

I was so grateful to share this day with them. It was one in a million!

Oh, the fabulous team: (though I am a little partial --all my favs)
Venue - Mansion on Forsyth Park
Florals - Harvey Designs
Cake - Minette Rushing Custom Cakes
Band - The Dickens

Julie was waiting to see Bill for the first time...she was breathtaking.

Yes - it's DNA --a nod to their science professions and passion.

I am telling you...the Dickens keeps the house rocking. Thank you, Percy!

Savannah Photographer - Keith and the Kids
01.28.10  |  Portraits

Keith is my brother-in-law but I love him like a brother. That is what 15 years will do. He married my sister 3 months after I married Lou and we have gone through the stages of life together. He doesn't get to come visit as often as my sister so they traded places this time. My sister had to work and he drove the kids down from Ohio to celebrate the new year in warm Savannah. He and Lou had a great time with fishing, football and beer. And in exchange for all of my hospitality, I made him get gussied up with the kids.

Lord, I can't resist a great shot of a Dad and his daughter.

Love you guys! Can't wait until the next trip:)
